KIRKMICHAEL BACK
Kirkmichael is populated only along the courses of the River A'an,
Conglass Water and Burns of Lochy and Brown, so at almost all points
is separated by well-defined ranges of hills from adjoining parishes in
Aberdeenshire, Inverness-shire and Banffshire. Although maps and
books all use the forms Avon or Aven, A'an as used here reflects the
actual pronunciation.

ST FERGUS (Banffshire detached) BACK
Although the whole parish of St Fergus was a detached portion of Banffshire, it is not included under that county in the 1845 New Statistical Account but is shown as part of Aberdeenshire, where its entry opens: "This parish was formerly named Langley, and originally Inverugie.......It assumed its present designation in the year 1616. This parish, though locally situated in Aberdeenshire, belongs to the County of Banff, to which it was annexed by an act of Legislature, obtained through the influence of the Cheynes, the ancient proprietors, who, being the hereditary sheriffs of Banff, were naturally very desirous to have their own domains placed under their own jurisdiction. But its connection with the county of Banff is now recognised in no other way than by the payment of the ordinary taxes. It is bounded on the east by the German Ocean; on the south by the river Ugie; on the north by the parish of Crimond; and on the west by the parish of Longside. Its extreme length is 5½ miles and its greatest breadth 3½ miles. Its superficial extent is about 12 square miles.
The boundary between St Fergus and Crimond runs SW from the
sea due E of Rattray House, passing S of it, then NW to Dipplebrae.
It then runs SW to the Old Deer boundary W of St Fergus Moss,
then SE to the Longside boundary at Blackhill which runs SSE of
Rora to the River Ugie at Artlaw, following ESE to the sea
