Francis is dismissed from the police force for assaulting his sergeant.
 

1886 Francis is earning 20/- shillings weekly.  

1887 Living at 30 Lime Street. - August is listed as a hammerhand but idle

1889 6 Feb 1889 Father William dies.

21 Dec - From Francis GRANT 10 Plantation Street, Glasgow. I
receiver your letter but in the meantime it is entirely out of my power to
come to any arrangement such as you suggest. I Have had a great
deal of trouble my wife, who died a month ago, was a long time ill and
what with her funeral & other expenses caused by her long illness, I
am at present very much in debt, and seeing that my wages are only
16/- per week, I assure you that I am very sorry I cannot do anything
for my mother just now, but if trade was getting better and I was
allowed some time to ? myself, I would then do all in my power to arrange with you.
